Fatal shooting of a university student sparks outrage in Mogadishu

|

MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – Protest erupted in the heart of Mogadishu at Siinaay junction on Saturday following the tragic death of a young University student at the hands of a Somali policeman.

The victim, identified as Ali Wasiir, was among a group of impassioned young men and women protesting the actions of the Mayor of Mogadishu and the Wardhiigley district commissioner.

According to eyewitnesses, the demonstrators had gathered outside the Wardhigley district commissioner’s office to voice their opposition to the removal of an individual known to them from the district service committee.

However, the peaceful protest took a deadly turn when a police officer reportedly opened fire, resulting in the death of Ali Wasiir and injuries to two others.

In the wake of the shooting, enraged protesters flooded the streets, demanding justice and accountability for the senseless loss of life.

They vowed to march to the district office if the perpetrator responsible for Ali Wasiir’s death was not swiftly brought to justice.

The atmosphere in Siinaay junction turned tumultuous, leading to the closure of the small marketplace for several hours in the morning as chaos and uncertainty gripped the area.

Despite the escalating tensions, authorities from the Banadir regional administration and Wardhigley district commissioner Saynab Xaabsey, whose guards were implicated in the fatal shooting, have remained silent on the matter.

Speaking to Kaab TV at the scene, protesters reiterated their demands for justice and accountability, urging Mogadishu Mayor Yusuf Hussein Jimale to intervene in the unfolding crisis.
