The Somali government released a warning about the Shabelle River’s rising levels.

MUQDISHO (KAAB TV) – The Federal Government of Somalia’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change released a warning to people of the Shabelle River area, particularly those near the town of Beledweyne. The warning comes as the river’s water level has climbed to unsafe levels that could cause floods.

The government emphasised the growing size of the Shabelle River and the possibility of flooding. Residents living near bodies of water, such as rivers and streams, are advised to exercise caution and keep a safe distance.

Rainfall levels in Somalia have varied recently, with substantial rains reported in locations such as Hirshabelle, Puntland, and Jubbaland. On the Puntland side, substantial damage has been reported on the roadway that connects Garowe and Bosaso, as floods have caused bridges to close and swamped nearby neighbourhoods.

According to the Ministry’s most recent assessment on Somalia’s spring rainfall, low and moderate rains are forecast in several locations. Meteorological updates are critical for communities and authorities to remain informed and prepared for anticipated weather issues, particularly in flood-prone areas along major rivers such as the Shabelle.
