ELWAK, Somalia (KAAB TV) – As the Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) begins its withdrawal as part of the ATMIS drawdown, Jubaland showcases newly trained forces who are prepared to take security responsibility in Elwak town of the Gedo region.
Local officials state that the new forces will maintain security as the threat from Al-Shabaab remains high. Jubaland Vice President Mohamud Sayid Adan recently expressed concern that the African Union Mission (ATMIS) withdrawal without a proper plan to fill the gap will risk Al-Shabaab taking over the region.
However, local security officials in Elwak assert that their only option now is to do whatever they can to secure this important border town.
Elwak, located on the Kenya-Somalia border, has faced constant attacks by the militant group for years.
