Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – At least four people were killed and many others injured in Luuq district following intense clashes between rival clans on Friday afternoon.
According to local reporters, the conflict between the communities in Luuq district on a land ownership dispute previously adjudicated by the district court.
However, the court’s decision failed to satisfy the parties involved.
The violence erupted in the afternoon when tribal militias from the Gaba Weyne and Macallin Weyne clans began fighting within the district.
The clashes quickly spread throughout the area.
A Kaab TV reporter in the Gedo region reported that later in the evening, unidentified groups set the market in Luuq district ablaze. The fire continues to rage, causing extensive property damage.
The motive behind the market fire remains unclear.
However, local residents informed Kaab TV that they believe outside groups associated with the warring factions are responsible.
The market, a crucial commercial hub in Luuq district, plays a significant role in the Gedo region’s economy.
The rising number of ethnic conflicts in Somalia has instilled widespread fear among the populace, with minimal efforts visible to mitigate the violence, leading to numerous fatalities.
There are also allegations in some regions that politicians and government officials may be fueling these conflicts.
As of now, no official statements have been released by authorities in Luuq or Dolow districts regarding the ongoing fighting in Luuq.
