MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has announced the launch of an investigation into alleged civilian casualties in Buulo Mareer in the Lower Shabelle region of Somalia.
In a statement, the AU mission expressed that it has “learned with deep concern of a tragic incident in Buulo Mareer on 17 July 2024, involving the loss of two civilian lives and injury to another.”
“ATMIS is aware of media allegations linking the Mission to these unfortunate events,” the statement continued. “The Mission has initiated a thorough investigation into these allegations and hereby assures all stakeholders that the findings will be made public upon conclusion.”
ATMIS extended its condolences to the bereaved families, wishing them strength during this difficult time. The Mission says it emphasized that its Peace Support Operations in Somalia are guided by a core mandate to protect civilian lives.
“ATMIS forces are trained and mentored to strictly comply with International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights standards, and the Rules of Engagement governing military operations, with particular emphasis on protecting civilians and children.”
“ATMIS remains committed to transparency and accountability in all its operations and will provide updates as the investigation progresses.”
The incident reportedly involved the killing and alleged beheading of at least three civilian farmers by AU forces in Buulo Mareer. The victims were among five farmers having their dinner on Tuesday night when Ugandan soldiers on patrol raided the farm. Family members of the victims described the brutal deaths of the three young men.
On Wednesday, locals took to the streets to condemn the AU and call for accountability.
