One Person, One Vote in Puntland: Pioneering Democracy and Inclusive Public Participation -VIDEO

|

GAROWE (KAAB TV) – In Puntland, a significant milestone has been completed this week with the introduction of the “One Person, One Vote” system.

The last three remaining districts of the 36 districts of Puntland State have voted on Tuesday, 23 July 2024 to elect their local government leaders, unlike the rest of Somalia where clan elders decide who to become a member of parliament.

This groundbreaking approach marks a pivotal shift from traditional practices towards a more inclusive and democratic process. For the first time, every eligible voters have the opportunity to participate directly in choosing their leaders, fostering a sense of ownership and engagement in the political landscape.

This nascent democracy, in a region in northeastern Somalia, not only reflects a commitment to fair representation but also paves the way for broader public participation, heralding a new era of civic involvement and political transformation in Puntland.
