Italy Halts Visa Processing in Mogadishu Amid Human Trafficking Concerns

|

MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – The Embassy of Italy in Nairobi has announced the immediate suspension of all Schengen visa issuance for applications processed by the Italian Embassy in Mogadishu.

This move, which took effect on September 24, 2024, was communicated through an official note addressed to Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

According to the communiqué, all applicants seeking entry visas to Schengen states must now submit their applications directly to the Italian Embassy in Nairobi.

“All the applications referring to any type of entry visa should be submitted directly by the applicants to the Embassy of Italy in Nairobi,” the statement clarified.

While the embassy did not provide a specific reason for the sudden suspension, it reiterated its commitment to strong bilateral relations with Somalia, stating, “The Embassy of Italy to the Federal Republic of Somalia avails itself of the opportunity to renew… the assurances of its highest consideration.”

In addition to the formal communication, the embassy also took to X (formerly Twitter) to reinforce its decision, posting: “Please be informed that the Embassy of Italy in Nairobi has suspended with immediate effect the issuance of entry Schengen visas for all those applications that are processed by the Embassy of Italy in Mogadishu.”

Sources suggest the suspension may be part of a broader European Union initiative to combat human trafficking, following investigations implicating Somali government officials and criminal networks in smuggling operations.

Italy, a key entry point for migrants seeking to enter the EU, has been heavily affected by the migration crisis, with traffickers exploiting routes through the country to reach Europe.
