HARGEISA (KAAB TV) – In a press conference held in Cairo on Sunday, Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah Elsisi assured Somalia of unwavering support in the face of external threats, expressing his commitment to Somalia’s security.
The announcement came during an official visit by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to the Egyptian capital.
“Egypt stands resolute in its commitment to Somalia’s security. No external actor will be permitted to threaten the Somali people or jeopardize their safety. We are unwavering in our support for our brethren, and if they call upon us, we will not hesitate to act,” declared Elsisi.
The discussions between Elsisi and Mohamud delved into the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Ethiopia and Somaliland, signed on January 1.
The agreement grants Addis Ababa access to the Red Sea and a naval base, sparking concerns and displeasure from both Mogadishu and Cairo.
Military cooperation was a focal point in the talks between Somalia and Egypt.
The Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in response to the developments, emphasized the historical ties between Somaliland and Egypt.
The statement acknowledged Egypt’s concerns regarding stability in the Horn of Africa.
“In light of the recent developments, we would like to reiterate Somaliland’s unwavering commitment to resolving regional matters through dialogue and cooperation. Nevertheless, given the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Republic of Somaliland and Ethiopia, we want to reiterate our firm opposition to any external interference,” affirmed the statement.
