NAIROBI (KAAB TV) – In a gesture of respect and solidarity during the holy month of Ramadan, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has commenced food deliveries to Somali prisons.
Over the next four weeks, detainees will receive essential items such as dates, goat meat, rice, beans, milk, and tea, ensuring they can observe Ramadan with dignity.
Pascal Cuttat, head of the ICRC in Somalia, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Providing food during Ramadan has become a tradition for the ICRC in Somalia and part of our efforts to ensure detainees receive humane and dignified treatment.”
The ICRC’s work in Somali prisons extends beyond food deliveries. Regular visits to detention centers are conducted to monitor living conditions and ensure detainees are treated humanely. This initiative underscores the organization’s commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all detainees, irrespective of their circumstances.
Visiting detainees and advocating for their rights is a fundamental aspect of ICRC’s global mission.
By providing support during Ramadan, the ICRC aims to alleviate the hardship faced by detainees and foster a sense of community and compassion during this sacred time.
