Landmine explosion kills regional MPs during military operation in Galmudug

|

DHUUSAMAREEB (KAAB TV) – Tragedy struck on Monday as a landmine explosion claimed the lives of at least three individuals, including two Somali regional Members of Parliament (MPs), during a military operation in the central Galmudug state.

Local authorities confirmed that the incident occurred as government troops, in conjunction with local fighters, successfully recaptured the town of Ceel Garas from Al-Shabaab insurgents.

Among the victims were Galmudug lawmaker Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed, known by his alias “Mohamed Yare,” and Abdullahi Ibrahim Shaaciye, a prominent member of the local city council in the town of Dhusamareb.

Shaaciye also held the position of a military officer.

The tragic incident unfolded as both MPs entered Ceel Garas, a town in the remote rural area outside Dhuusamareeb, shortly after government forces, supported by the Habargedir clan militia, had successfully regained control of the town from Al-Shabaab insurgents who had previously occupied it.

Up until now, the Somali government has not released any official details regarding the circumstances of the attack that led to the untimely demise of a member of the Galmudug Parliament.

In the broader context of the region, the government continues to carry out operations aimed at countering the Al-Shabaab extremist group. Consequently, numerous officials are actively engaged in efforts to maintain peace and security within the area, where tensions remain high.
