Marriage Among Somali Youth: Balancing Tradition and Modernity

|

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The topic of marriage is a never-ending debate among the younger generation. It affects family relationships and has even become part of cultural identity and clan connections.

However, in modern society, where social media has increased, social norms are changing.

Young men and women are already struggling to alter the long-held beliefs about inter-clan marriage.

According to some, this change can be seen as positive, while others view it negatively.

As Mukhtar stated, the new ways of dating and marriage among modern Somalis have also led to a rise in a culture of abuse against women, increased divorce rates, and violence against young girls.

However, Ayaan, a young woman living in Mogadishu, blames girls today, saying they have strayed from traditional values.

We interviewed several young people to hear their perspectives.
