Puntland president Deni requests 45-day extension for cabinet formation

Garowe (KAAB TV) — Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni has submitted a formal request to the Puntland House of Representatives seeking a 45-day extension for the formation of his new government.

President Deni, who was re-elected on January 8, 2023, marking a historic second term in office, made the request as he undertakes the task of building a new government and engaging in consultations for the formation of a council of ministers.

Deni instructed the existing cabinet to continue their duties following his re-election.

Citing his commitment to constructing a robust administration, President Deni told lawmakers that he is busy engaging multiple stakeholders on the formation of a council of ministers requires with a careful consideration, and hence needs for this extension.

Additionally, reports from the Puntland presidency suggest that President Deni is planning a foreign trip, contributing to the delay in finalizing the selection of his cabinet.

During Thursday’s inauguration ceremony held in Garowe, President Deni announced his intention to convene Somali politicians for an inclusive dialogue, further underlining his commitment to fostering unity.

It is noteworthy that the Puntland leader has been in a bitter standoff with Mogadishu since May 2022.
