GALKAYO (KAAB TV) – Somalia’s Puntland State has executed 10 prisoners accused of being members of the Al-Shabaab terror group on Saturday.
The convicts had been found guilty by the regional military court of participating in terrorist activities, including various murders in Gaalkayo city.
The execution took place in an open field in Gaalkayo, located in the Mudug region, where a firing squad carried out the sentences.
The Commander of the Mudug Regional Police Division, Colonel Mahamoud Abdi Hakim Yusuf, accompanied by the Commander of the Mudug Sector Darawiish Forces, Colonel Sharma’arke Sheikh Doon, announced the names of the 10 convicts who were executed. They were:
- Convict Hassan Jaamac Maohamed
- Convict Liibaan Adan Muuse
- Convict Barkhad Awil Hersi
- Hassan Muuse Ahmed
- Convict Abdiqaaliq Warsame Barre
- Convict Adde Abdullaahi Mohamed
- Convict Mohamed Abdisalaan Ahmed
- Convict Adirahmaan Faysal Salaad
- Convict Abdiqani Farhaan Abdullaahi
- Convict Abdisalaan Sahal Shucayb
The executions come just a week after a group of militants escaped from the Gaalkayo prison under unknown circumstances.
Addressing the gathering at the execution site, Colonel Mahamoud Abdi Hakim Yusuf and Colonel Sharma’arke Sheikh Doon urged parents in the Mudug region to protect their children from joining Al-Shabaab, emphasizing that anyone arrested for being of the group will be put on military court and if found guilty will be executed.
The death penalty is widely carried out in Somalia, particularly for those convicted of terrorism and other serious crimes.
