HARGEISA (Kaab TV) – Somaliland’s newly elected President, Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro, has announced his first cabinet, expanding the government to 28 ministries, three more than the previous administration.
In a decree issued by the President’s Office, significant changes include the restructuring of the Ministry of Interior into two separate entities: the Ministry of Security and the Ministry of Regional Development, effectively retiring the “Interior” designation.
The former Civil Aviation Agency has been elevated to a ministry with a full minister, while the Presidency Directorate has been upgraded to the Ministry of the Presidency, reflecting President Irro’s vision for a more streamlined and inclusive administration.
Representation for Marginalized Communities
For the first time in Somaliland’s history, minority clans such as the Gabooye, Gurgura, Akisho, Tol Jecle and Ayuub have been given full ministerial roles.
Four ministerial positions were given to the former administration’s coalition clans of the Habar Awal which also indicates their inclusion into the new government.
This unprecedented step is being praised as a move toward social justice and inclusivity, addressing decades of marginalization.
The cabinet also includes representation from eastern clans in Sool and Sanaag, regions that remain contested due to disputes with Puntland and the SSC-Khaatumo administration.
President Irro, leader of the opposition party Waddani, won last month’s election on a platform promising an inclusive government.
Today’s cabinet appointments align with his pledge to foster unity and equitable representation among Somaliland’s diverse communities.
