HARGEISA (KAAB TV) – Somaliland’s Minister of Interior, Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, has urged the Somali government to address the growing connection between the extremist group Al-Shabaab and Houthi fighters from Yemen.
Speaking to Al Arabiya TV, Minister Kahin warned that the alliance between the two groups could threaten regional security and called for urgent intervention.
“The link between the Houthis and Al-Shabaab is strong and presents a serious challenge to regional peace. The Somali government must take immediate steps to prevent further cooperation between these groups,” Kahin stated.
Minister Kahin also appealed to the international community for assistance, emphasizing that Somaliland alone cannot manage the security risks in the Red Sea region. He highlighted the potential disruption to vital trade routes in the area due to the emerging alliance.
His comments follow revelations from U.S. intelligence community in June, which indicated that Houthi fighters had discussed supplying weapons to Al-Shabaab.
American officials are currently investigating whether Iran, a known supporter of the Houthis, is facilitating the transfer of arms.
