Somalis express mixed reactions on death penalty in femicide case

|

MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – Whether it is a politically motivated or a true justice, or delayed justice, residents of Mogadishu have expressed divergent views on the case of Sayid Ali Moalim Daud, who was sentenced to death for the second time on Wednesday for the murder of his ex-wife, Luul Abdiasis.

Luul, a mother of five who was pregnant with her sixth child, died after being burned to death by Sayid Ali Moalim Daud on January 26, 2024.

The motive of the attack has been described as worsened relationship.

Initially sentenced to death on March 6, Sayid Ali appealed the verdict, but the appeals court upheld the death sentence.

Kaab TV gathered street reactions and found mixed responses from the citizens.

Some see the verdict as delayed justice.

“The verdict is long overdue. Femicide should not be accepted, and killers must not be allowed to survive and kill more,” said Mohamed Omar.

He added that true justice would only be achieved when the death penalty is implemented.

“He does not look like someone in jail. Every day he has new clothes and expensive watches,” he noted.

Others are pleased with the outcome.

Abdirahman, who claims to be from the same family as the victim, expressed his satisfaction with the death sentence.

“I am very happy. We will continue to pursue justice,” Abdirahman said.

However, there are those who believe the case is politically motivated.

“I do not see any evidence that shows that he killed her. It is just a politically motivated case. Social media played a big role, and the family of Sayid Ali is not favored,” said a woman who spoke to Kaab TV.

She argued that even if Sayid Ali is executed, the case would not solve the wider problems facing the country.

Following Wednesday’s court decision, Sayid Ali’s defense lawyers expressed their intention to appeal to a higher court.
