Turkish prosecutors issue arrest warrant for Somali president’s son in fatal hit-and-run

ISTANBUL (Kaab TV) – Turkish prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the 40-year-old son of the Somali president, who is accused of killing a Turkish citizen in a tragic hit-and-run incident.

The İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the warrant, revealing that the suspect had fled to Somalia after being questioned by Istanbul police regarding the incident that claimed the life of 38-year-old Turkish motorcyclist Yunus Emre Göçer on November 30, 2023.

The İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office disclosed that the suspect was driving a diplomatic vehicle belonging to the Somali consulate in Istanbul when the fatal collision occurred.

Although Yunus Emre Göçer succumbed to his injuries in the hospital a few days later, the accused fled the country, sparking outrage among Turkish officials who expressed displeasure at the apparent evasion of justice.

Reports indicate that Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is currently in Mogadishu, according to Somali sources.

Both his father, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and the Villa Somalia have remained silent on the matter.

Former Turkish Ambassador to Somalia, Kani Torun, on Saturday, called on the Somali president to cooperate with the legal process and send his son back to Turkey to face the court.

Meanwhile, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has pledged not to let the matter rest, vowing to pursue legal procedures diligently.

Diplomatic sources have confirmed that Turkish police have reached out to Interpol, seeking assistance in the apprehension and extradition of the suspect, believed to be hiding in the Somali capital under the protection of his father.
