U.S Ambassador Richard Riley undertakes important visit to Somaliland amid escalating tensions in the region

HARGEYSA (KAAB TV) – In a significant move underscoring the United States’ role as a key ally to Somalia and Somaliland, U.S. Ambassador to Somalia Richard H. Riley visited Hargeisa, Somaliland, for high-level discussions with President Muse Bihi Abdi, senior political figures, civil society leaders, and business community members.

The visit on Thursday comes at a critical juncture for the Horn of Africa region, amid escalating tensions and emerging crises.

In a statement released by the U.S Embassy, Ambassador Riley’s visit reaffirmed the United States’ longstanding commitment to supporting prosperity, democratic institutions, and stability in the region. His discussions focused on enhancing regional cooperation and dialogue to address pressing diplomatic and security challenges.

“The United States is dedicated to fostering prosperity and democratic governance in Somalia and Somaliland. Our engagement here is crucial for the stability and future of the region,” Riley emphasized.

A significant part of Ambassador Riley’s agenda was to promote the importance of a vibrant civil society and a free and professional press. He met with private sector leaders to encourage stronger ties with the U.S. business community, highlighting the critical role that economic partnerships play in regional stability.

“A free press and an active civil society are cornerstones of democracy. They are essential for transparent governance and accountability,” Riley stated.

Ambassador Riley’s visit occurs against the backdrop of the ongoing withdrawal of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) forces. This development has sparked widespread fears of a potential resurgence of Al-Shabaab, threatening the fragile stability in Somalia.

Furthermore, the region is witnessing diplomatic tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia over the controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Somaliland and Addis Ababa.

These tensions are exacerbated by reports that Djibouti has initiated training for local militias against Somaliland, adding another layer of complexity to the regional security landscape.

The United States’ engagement in Somalia and Somaliland is pivotal, particularly as the region navigates these turbulent times.

In the U.S Embassy statement, Ambassador Riley reiterated the importance of adhering to election timelines and ensuring that democratic processes are upheld.

“In these challenging times, it is vital that we support our partners in maintaining democratic governance and stability. The U.S. remains committed to being a steadfast ally in this endeavor,” Riley affirmed.

On his part, President Muse Bihi Abdi, whose ruling Kulmiye party is seeking re-election for the upcoming November 13, election, said, “I was honoured to receive U.S. Ambassador Richard H. Riley on his visit to the Republic of Somaliland.”

“We discussed regional affairs, fostering cooperation in the Horn of Africa, upcoming elections, and strengthening relations between Somaliland and the United States of America,” President Bihi added.

The American ambassador’s visit could be seen as the United States’ proactive stance in addressing the multifaceted challenges in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing dialogue, cooperation, and the promotion of democratic values.

Even though Somalia and Somaliland face critical security and political challenges, the U.S. can indeed play a crucial role in fostering stability and supporting the region’s path towards sustainable peace and development.
