MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – In a groundbreaking move, the United States has unveiled the “People Centered Governance” initiative, aimed at empowering the people of Somalia, as confirmed by the U.S Embassy.

The U.S. government, in collaboration with the Somali government, is funding the People Centered Governance activity to address a crucial local governance gap.

The initiative focuses on enhancing the visibility, effectiveness, and functionality of district councils, emphasizing their pivotal role in fostering a strong two-way relationship between the government and communities.

USAID and U.S Embassy launch a new People Centred Governance initiative.

“Good governance is integral to Somalia’s long-term stability, and this activity aims to support local governments in becoming fair and effective in meeting citizens’ needs, mitigating the influence of violent extremist groups,” stated Shane Dixon, Charge d’Affaires, U.S. Embassy Mogadishu.

The initiative encourages Somali ownership, with Mr. Dixon emphasizing, “Your active participation, insights, and collaboration will be the driving force behind this project’s success.”

While providing resources for local priorities, the People Centered Governance project places a significant emphasis on helping district councils mobilize domestic revenue and expand the use of public-private partnerships to benefit communities.

On a national level, the USAID People Centered Governance activity will advocate for broader policy reforms crucial for the sustained success of district councils, aiming to establish them as resilient pillars of Somalia’s governance landscape.

Numerous research studies indicate that Somali citizens lack trust in their government due to its perceived weakness and corruption. Simultaneously, there is a lack of trust in Al-Shabaab. Consequently, citizens find themselves without a viable governance option to rely on.

Addressing citizen skepticism towards the government and extremist groups, the U.S Embassy stressed that the program signifies a commitment to a Somalia where citizens have faith in their government, and extremism finds no fertile ground for operations.

The U.S Embassy, however, says, this initiative is not just a program launch but a dedication to a brighter future for Somalia.
