MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – In a significant diplomatic move, UK Minister for Armed Forces, James Heappey MP, embarked on a crucial visit to Mogadishu on 25th February, aiming to solidify the partnership between the UK and Somalia in defense and security realms.
During his visit, Minister Heappey held pivotal discussions with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at Villa Somalia, the official residence of the Somali President.
This meeting underscored the commitment of both nations to bolster cooperation in tackling security challenges and fostering stability in the region, particularly amidst the ongoing ATMIS transition process.
The Minister’s itinerary also included engagements with key international stakeholders, including UN Special Representative Catriona Laing, to underscore the imperative of continued collaboration in supporting Somalia’s efforts in countering threats posed by extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab.
“Somalia is a key partner for the UK and is vital to security and stability across the
region,” Minister Heappey said “My visit enabled me to see first hand the impact of UK-Somalia security cooperation, as well as encourage greater collaboration and deconfliction with key international partners, including the UN, US and EU.”
He continued “The challenges facing Somalia are complex, but we remain steadfast supporters of the efforts of the Federal Government to take the fight to al-Shabaab, take greater control of domestic security and deliver a secure and stable future for the Somali
people.”
Heappey’s visit also involved interacting with British troops actively involved in providing training and capacity building to the Somali Security Forces.
This direct engagement highlighted the tangible impact of UK-Somalia security cooperation on the ground and explored avenues for further assistance to enhance Somalia’s counterterrorism capabilities.
Reflecting on his visit, Minister Heappey emphasized the significance of Somalia as a strategic partner for the UK in promoting security and stability across the region.
He reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for the Federal Government of Somalia’s endeavors to combat terrorism, strengthen domestic security, and pave the way for a prosperous future for the Somali people.

Following his engagements in Mogadishu, Minister Heappey is scheduled to continue his regional tour with commitments in Kenya, underscoring the critical importance of the broader region in the UK’s strategic considerations.
