The Wajir Court set in an accused in a recent rape case.

Nairobi  (KAAB TV) – One of the six suspected of participating part in the gang rape of a newly married woman has been arraigned at Wajir City Court in Kenya’s north-east.

The accused denied all of the claims against him. Magistrate Roslyn Oganyo ordered him to remain in police detention until the completion of the hearing, with the next hearing set for next week.

Authorities are searching for another five individuals who may have been part of the event. The case attracted the attention of local women’s rights activists, who attended the trial to advocate for the victim.

The attack is said to have happened when the victim was on his way to a medical facility in Wajir. According to Daynaba, one of the slain woman’s relatives, her driver kidnapped her and then invited other males to join her. “They turned away from the road, covered their faces with the hijab, tied them up, and tied their legs,” Daynaba explained, citing the victim’s account.

The accused are believed to come from the same family as the victim, heightening the stress and haste to resolve the case. “Their families are well-known around here,” Daynaba remarked.

The attack highlights the continuous issue of sexual violence in Wajeer district, where the majority of rapes are reported, particularly against young girls. The head of the court emphasised that anyone found guilty of rape or abuse would face harsh legal penalties.

The defendant is currently not represented by a lawyer. The next court hearing is scheduled for April 18.

Rape occurs often in Wajir district, particularly among young females. The judge confirmed that individuals found guilty of rape or abuse will be prosecuted.
