NEW YORK (Kaab TV) – The United Nations Security Council has unanimously approved the establishment of a new UN mission in Somalia, named the United Nations Transition Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS).
The new mission, set to start in November 2024, will replace the current United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and will be mandated for a two-year term.
All 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the resolution on Wednesday, highlighting strong international support for a renewed approach in Somalia.
UNTMIS will focus on supporting Somalia’s transition towards stability and governance, continuing UNSOM’s efforts while adapting to the country’s evolving needs.
The new mission’s mandate is expected to include assisting with security, governance, and development as Somalia works towards sustainable peace amid ongoing challenges, including security threats and political tensions.
