ROME (KAAB TV) – The bodies of 13 Sudanese migrants have been retrieved while 27 others remain unaccounted for after their boat capsized on Wednesday near the shores of Tunisia.
Judge Farid Ben Jha confirmed the grim toll, revealing that the vessel, which originated from Sfax, was carrying a total of 42 individuals, all hailing from Sudan. Only two survivors have been rescued thus far from the wreckage.
Tunisia has emerged as a primary departure point for migrants seeking refuge from economic hardship and conflict across Africa and the Middle East, replacing Libya in this role.
The country has witnessed a surge in migration, with many embarking on perilous journeys across the Mediterranean in hopes of reaching Europe for a better life.
Last year marked a tragic milestone, with Tunisian coast guards recovering the bodies of nearly 1,000 migrants who perished at sea—surpassing previous records.
The perilous conditions have claimed numerous lives, with vessels frequently sinking off Tunisia’s coast, particularly those carrying migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa en route to Italy.
Notably, Tunisians themselves have been among those attempting the treacherous crossing, underscoring the dire circumstances prompting individuals to risk their lives in pursuit of a brighter future.
Last month, approximately 40 Tunisian migrants were reported missing after setting sail towards Italy, adding to the mounting toll of lives lost at sea.
As the search and rescue efforts continue in the wake of this latest tragedy, it serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of migration and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address this ongoing crisis.
