MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – In a country where many Somali youth remain unemployed despite completing their education, and some resort to the perilous sea journey to Europe in search of a better life, Abdiasis Dhaqane chose a different path.
Together with his friends, he founded Deg Deg Delivery, a company that provides fast food delivery from restaurants to busy individuals in need of quick service.
From offices to residential homes, they serve numerous neighborhoods in Mogadishu, offering a beacon of hope and opportunity in a challenging environment.
“We started this business in late 2023 to serve the locals who need the delivery service. Currently, we offer three main services: restaurants, supermarkets, and pharmacies,” Abdiasis said.
The advancement in technology played a crucial role in turning Abdiasis’s vision into reality. They created an online application called Deg Deg Delivery, where customers can place their orders.
“This app has helped us a lot, as many people are moving online. We have reached 30% of our target, but we hope to increase our customer base,” Abdiasis explained.
At the start of 2023, there were 1.76 million internet users in Somalia, with internet penetration standing at 9.8 percent. Despite the digital divide, Deg Deg Delivery also utilizes direct phone calls to reach more customers.
Operating a business in Mogadishu is fraught with challenges, from safety concerns to increasing traffic congestion. To mitigate these issues, Abdiasis employed a group of motorcycle operators to deliver orders.
A certain percentage of the revenue earned by the company goes to these motorcycle operators.
Deg Deg Delivery is not just a business; it is a symbol of resilience and innovation in the face of adversity, providing much-needed services and creating job opportunities in a city where hope can sometimes seem elusive.
