Somalia FM Fiqi Faces Impeachment Over Serious Corruption and Employee Threats

|

MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – Members of Somalia’s Parliament submitted a formal motion of impeachment against Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi on Saturday.

The document, leaked to the media, reveals that 189 MPs signed the motion, which was handed over to the Speaker of Parliament, Sheikh Adan Madoobe, earlier in the day.

The motion outlines several serious allegations against Fiqi, including:

  1. Violating foreign service laws;
  2. Engaging in bribery and profiting from Ministry certification services;
  3. Discrimination and nepotism within Ministry staff;
  4. Embezzling funds intended for embassies abroad;
  5. Mishandling Ministry and embassy records;
  6. Dismantling the Ministry’s organizational structure;
  7. Intimidating and threatening senior officials and employees;
  8. Mismanaging training programs and seminars;
  9. Lacking necessary diplomatic skills;
  10. Paralyzing the Ministry’s operations.

Though it remains unclear how the impeachment process will unfold, MPs backing the motion told Kaab TV they have garnered significant support, and a debate is expected soon.

The move comes while Minister Fiqi is currently abroad, having recently attended meetings in New York and Ankara.

Fiqi, seen as an ally of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, took office as Foreign Minister in April after serving as Interior Minister.

He has recently been embroiled in controversy after calling for the execution of opposition MPs who criticized Egypt’s involvement in Somali affairs amidst rising tensions between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa over the Somaliland MOU.

Fiqi has yet to comment on the impeachment motion.

His remarks labeling opposition MPs as “traitors” who deserve public hanging have drawn widespread criticism.

Meanwhile, the Somali Federal Government, largely restricted to Mogadishu, faces increasing opposition from regional states, while much of the country remains under the control of militant group Al-Shabaab.
