22 Somali Migrants Drown in Indian Ocean Near Madagascar – Information Minister

|

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – About 22 Somali migrants have been confirmed dead after their boats capsized in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar on Saturday, according to Somalia’s Minister of Information, Daud Aweys.

The minister stated that the Madagascar government reported the incident, which involved two small boats carrying around 70 Somali migrants fleeing their homeland.

While some passengers were rescued, they are currently being held on a small island within Madagascar’s territory.

The tragedy highlights the increasing exodus of Somalis risking dangerous sea routes to escape violence, unemployment, and widespread human rights abuses.

Many blame the worsening conditions under the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for driving people to such desperate measures.

The information minister says, the government will send a delegation to observe the situation and repatriate the rescued Somalis back to Mogadishu.
